The Handoff Chasm
Most design systems die in the handoff. Designers create pristine component variants in Figma with arbitrary hex codes and custom spacings. When engineers attempt to translate them into React, they invent ad-hoc CSS classes, guessing margins and font weights.
Six months later, the product is riddled with inconsistent shades of red, mismatched button heights, and duplicate styles. To build a system that scales, the token vocabulary must be identical on both sides of the screen.
If a color or spacing does not exist as an explicit design token, it does not exist in production.
